PHYsical therapy is primary care
Both North Carolina (est. 1985) and South Carolina (est. 1998) have direct access which allows patients to seek physical therapy care without a physician referral. Direct access helps those obtain a faster and a more direct line of care to a physical therapist – meaning anyone has the ability to see their physical therapist on his or her own free will.
By having direct access in both states, your physical therapist is your “gatekeeper” who is able to tend to your health care concerns faster and knows when to refer to other healthcare professionals as appropriate.
